USA Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad (USAAO) 2024

Registration for the first round of USAAAO is open. Registration will close on January 31st, 2024.


The first round exam will take place on February 10th, and there will be two time slots available to accommodate students in different time zones. The competition will be online, and students will be proctored by USAAO volunteers through video calls.


Anyone can participate in the First Round Exam. Everyone who scores above the cutoff can participate in the National Astronomy Competition (NAC). To qualify for the national team, however, you must be a high school student with US citizenship or permanent residency.

Registration for the 6th Bangladesh Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2023 has started.

Register yourself now for the largest Astronomy Competition in Bangladesh to get a chance to represent Bangladesh at the 16th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Poland and the 2nd IOAA JR in Greece!


All school/college students who are below 19 years old (7th to 12th Graders and HSC/A-Level Candidates) can participate. The registration fee for participation is 100 BDT.

The Olympiad Mindset [How to NOT Procrastinate for Olympiads]

kay, let’s just be frank—we ALL procrastinate. Every single one of us. 

No matter how exceptionally brilliant we might be or how frustratingly hard-working we are, we just love to put off work for the indefinite future instead of doing it right now. Now whether your goal is to nail the Biology Olympiad or simply to write a short blogpost about procrastination, procrastination can be a really debilitating disease keeping you from completing your objectives in time. What’s worse, excelling at Olympiads, national or international, can be a really tough job—you have to go through enormous volumes of textbooks, solve several past papers, and make sure you have a clear understanding of the subject. That’s a LOT of work. And having to tackle procrastination on top of that can be a major drawback as you watch an entire year go to waste only to binge study the night before the regional round. But don’t worry, you’re not alone in this battle against procrastination. And, hopefully, the following tips will help you beat this disease of the mind and be more efficient and productive.


Set smaller tasks with shorter deadlines
It is rather easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer size of a regular textbook and even thinking of getting started can frighten you. So instead of deciding to complete an entire textbook within a month or two, try finishing a chapter per week. The smaller the task the less stressed you’ll be which means you won’t be as much intimidated to start as you’d be otherwise. Now you’ll probably pile up work anyway but hey, isn’t it better to have only one chapter to complete before the weekly deadline rather than having the whole book on your shoulders just a week before the regional round? Also, people tend to procrastinate less when the deadline is closer.


Put up “motivational” posters
As stupid as it may look, this is a method I personally love using. If you ever get a chance of visiting my place, you’ll probably be shocked, if not in coma, by the sight of my room. At first sight, it might appear as if some criminal psychopath has scribbled hate messages all over my walls but look closer and you’ll realize that these are only desperate attempts made by a lazy teenager to force himself to work. Trust me, it actually works. When you wake up every day to see things like “You are a loser” or “Get to work, you lazy slob!” staring you in the face, you don’t really have much choice other than actually getting to work.


Visualize the future you want
A very effective source of motivation would be none other than your own imagination. Imagine that it’s the awarding ceremony of an International Olympiad and your name’s just been announced. Try to feel the joy, the glory, the pride as you walk up the podium with our flag wrapped around your shoulders. A medal gleaming above your chest. Isn’t that just wonderful? I believe that’s enough motivation to keep you pumped up for days!


Remind yourself that the future you is you too
It may sound weird but yes, it is true. The people most prone to suffer from procrastination are those who feel “detached” from their future selves. You can realize this by trying to imagine yourself ten years from now. I, for one, imagine myself as an accomplished physicist working as a researcher at a reputable organization. And yes, that does seem like a different person entirely from who I am right now. But what I fail to see is that it is me who has to do all that hard work, it is me who has to work his way to the top. We procrastinate to avoid the stress associated with all these tasks at hand but all we end up doing is creating more stress for the future us. Convincing yourself that it is you who will have to solve all those question papers anyway (with much less time) might actually help you get started.


Avoid distractions
Not only is procrastination about avoiding stress or other bad feelings that come with work, it has also got to do with the immediate pleasure of doing more “fun” things instead. For example, playing video games. Now I’m not going to ask you to abandon doing what you love most, we all deserve to get a break every now and then but you should always remember to keep it within a limit. Never let yourself get addicted to something. If you find yourself wasting more than two hours a day on a particular task, you know that it’s getting out of hand. It is rather common nowadays to see a kid spend his/her entire day on various social media platforms like Facebook. How to tackle this addiction? Simple. Switch off your phone and tuck it off safely in a place that is away from your immediate line of sight.


The hacks mentioned above, as simple as they may sound, can actually make a difference to the way you study. Now these are no magic tricks; it is you who has to be determined enough to get the job done. And the best hack is to believe in you. Know that you can do it. And that you WILL do it! So waste no more time and get started with whatever it is you’re procrastinating working on right now because I know you wouldn’t be reading this post otherwise. Best of luck!

11th Bangladesh Astronomy Olympiad 2016

Registration for 11th Bangladesh Astronomy Olympiad 2016 has started. 

The divisional rounds will be starting from 11th March 2016 and the national round will take place on 25th March 2016.


All school/college students who were born in or after 1997 are eligible to participate. The registration fee for participation is 400 BDT and deadline for registration is on 20th February 2016.


The winners of this year’s competition will be selected to represent Bangladesh in the 10th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) 2016 to be held in India in this December. The entire expenditure of the IOAA participation will be provided by the Bangladesh Astronomical Association.

Iran Astronomy & Astrophysics Olympiad (IAAO) 2014 Papers [Past Olympiad Papers]


Iran's 8th IOAA (International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics) team has secured 4 Gold Medals and 6 Silver Medals in the competition. 

So far, this is the Iran team's best result in IOAA. This year's team has designed a set of problems, which will be helpful for preparation of Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad. It consists problems of total 1100 marks.

Useful Practical & Observational Skills for Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad [Short Note III]

Topic I: Constellations

Constellations are integral part of the Astronomy Olympiad. In modern astronomy, a constellation is an internationally defined area (by International Astronomical Union) of the celestial sphere. These areas are grouped around patterns that represent the shapes that give the name to the constellations. When astronomers say an object is "in" a given constellation, they mean it is within the boundaries of one of these defined areas of sky, as the patterns may have several variants in its representation.

Topic II: Messier Objects

The Messier objects are a set of astronomical objects first listed by French astronomer Charles Messier in 1771. The Messier catalogue comprises nearly all the most spectacular examples of the five types of deep sky object – diffuse nebulaeplanetary nebulaeopen clustersglobular clusters and galaxies. For astronomy olympiad, it will be worthwhile to learn positions of 40 easier messier objects

Equatorial Mount

An equatorial mount is a mount for instruments that follows the rotation of the sky (celestial sphere) by having one rotational axis parallel to the Earth's axis of rotation. This type of mount is used for astronomical telescopes and cameras. The advantage of an equatorial mount lies in its ability to allow the instrument attached to it to stay fixed on any object in the sky that has a diurnal motion by driving one axis at a constant speed. Such an arrangement is called a sidereal drive.

Useful Formulas for "Spherical Astronomy" for Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad [Short Note II]

Spherical astronomy or Positional astronomy is the branch of astronomy that is used to determine the location of objects on the celestial sphere, as seen at a particular date, time, and location on the Earth. It relies on the mathematical methods of spherical geometry and the measurements of astrometry.

The primary elements of spherical astronomy are coordinate systems and time. The coordinates of objects on the sky are listed using the equatorial coordinate system, which is based on the projection of the Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere. The position of an object in this system is given in terms of right ascension (α) and declination (δ). The latitude and local time can then be used to derive the position of the object in the horizontal coordinate system, consisting of the altitude and azimuth.

Bangladesh Astronomy Olympiad (BdAO) 2014 [Registration]

9th Bangladesh Astro-Olympiad 2014

Bangladesh Astronomical Association is going to organize 9th National Astronomy Olympiad. After holding a district-level selection process on January 24, 2014, the best contenders will take to the final stage on February 8 to showcase their knowledge of astronomy through various contests in the Olympiad. The qualifiers will be held in Barisal, Khulna, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Chittagong, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Narayanganj, Bogra, Feni, Moulvibazar and Dhaka.

Fourteen-nineteen year olds from all over the country can register for the Olympiad free of charge, and all participants will be given a certificate. This year, Bangladesh Astronomy Association will sponsor air tickets to Romania for the 3 winners of the National Olympiad.

The national round will take place on 8th February, 2014.

A Student's Guide to the Mathematics of Astronomy. 

This is an amazing book for the the beginners of Astronomy, written by by Daniel Fleisch and Julia Kregenow.  The authors have addressed the topics that students find most troublesome, ranging from stars and light to gravity and black holes. This book contains dozens of fully worked examples and over 150 exercises and homework problems. 


An accompanying website features a host of supporting materials, including interactive solutions for every exercise and problem in the text and a series of video podcasts in which the authors explain the important concepts of every section of the book.
